How to Tell Which MagSafe Charger You Have

Why Do I Care?

Apple released a new MagSafe charger this year (2024), which is thinner and smaller than previous iterations, and boasts 25W of charging capability.

This is great, but it can be hard to tell which MagSafe charger you have, and which accessories will work with your charger. I’ll lay out a few ways you can determine what you have.

Note: I am only discussing genuine Apple MagSafe chargers here.

Easiest Solution: Check the cable

Although they look very similar, there are some differences between the 2 chargers besides size. Please refer to the images below with their numerical markings

15W MagSafe Charger

  1. Rubber/silicone bend protector that is thicker than the rest of the cable

  2. The cable is made of rubber/silicone. It is smooth to the touch

25W MagSafe Charger

  1. No Rubber/silicone bend protector like there is in the image above

  2. The cable is braided, it feels like fabric

Alternative: Receipts

Another way to determine your charger version is to reference your order confirmation email, order history, or purchase receipt.
